CAW wants investigation into Xstrata’s plan to close Kidd site

CBJ Feb 8 - The Canadian Auto Workers union is asking federal and Ontario governments to investigate Xstrata PLC's reasons for closing its site in Timmins, Ontario.

Xstrata said last December that it plans to closes its copper and zinc operations in the northern Ontario city in May. The miner cited lower global demand and the high value of the Canadian dollar among reasons for the closure.

The CAW says should an investigation find Xstrata has little reason to close the site, Xstrata must be forced to divest its Timmins assets. The union says the closure, which will see almost 700 jobs lost and production move to Quebec, is wholly unnecessary.
